1936-37 Bobcat Basketball Team
Although the 1936-37 Bobcat basketball team did not put up as gaudy a record as many before or since, its achievements will always be remembered as among the most historic in Montana State’s glorious basketball history. In the last year of existence of the “Iod” Rocky Mountain Conference, a configuration which featured national powers BYU, Utah, Utah State, Wyoming and Colorado, a completely homegrown Bobcat team which had been together for four years captured the basketball title of a league which was well-established as one of the best in the land. MSC tied Utah for the Western Division title, then whipped the Utes 56-37 in Dillon to advance to the league playoffs. In the championship series, the ‘Cats beat Denver twice in three tries to win the league. The first group of Bobcats coached by legendary Brick Breeden, Montana State was led by Bill Ogle and Ed Exum. The 1937-38 Bobcats would again win the Rocky Mountain Conference an amazing two-year run, but that 1936-37 team will long be remembered for beating the top teams in the region and winning an improbable title.
