Corey Widmer Football, 1987-91 Years at MSU: 1987-91 Honors Earned: Big Sky Defensive MVP, two-time All-America Hometown: Bozeman, Montana “Corey dominated the defensive side of the ball every game.” –Dean Alexander, Voice of the Bobcats Corey Widmer remembers standing in the hallway of the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse, staring at the plaques denoting individuals and teams that comprised MSU’s Athletic Hall of Fame. “Your plaque could be up there some day,” former Bobcat coach Dave Arnold told him. Tonight, that prophesy from long ago comes true. Widmer becomes only the second Bozeman High graduate inducted into the Bobcat athletics shrine, and he was even more of a destructive force at Reno H. Sales Stadium than he was at Van Winkle Stadium down the street. Widmer was the 1990 Big Sky Conference Defensive MVP, earning All-America honors in ’90 and ’91. He played in the Hula Bowl, the Blue-Gray Game and the Senior Bowl after his senior season, and was drafted in the seventh round by the New York Giants. Widmer was a six-year starter at middle linebacker for the Giants, until his career was ended by injury in 1999. But he made his mark as a Bobcat. “Corey was a one-man highlight reel,” said Dean Alexander, Voice of the Bobcats. “He was the proverbial one-man wrecking crew. He went against the opponent’s best every game and he still couldn’t be stopped. He was THE GAME for the Bobcats on most Saturdays.” A two-time All-Big Sky choice, Widmer rolled up 109 solo tackles and 172 assists in his four seasons at Montana State, getting 33 sacks, 66 tackles for low, six fumbles caused, three recovered and five passes broken up. His sack total is third in school history, as is his total of 17 sacks in 1990, and he is fourth in school history in fumbles caused.
