“Craig had as great a set of offensive skills as any Bobcat I’ve seen. He was a gym rat who loved to play.” –Bobcat coach Mick Durham, Finberg’s backcourt mate
Dean Alexander, Montana State’s long-time radio play-by-play broadcaster, can boil Craig Finberg’s career down to one game. And he can boil that one game, a 99-89 loss to the Bayou Bengals in 1978, down to one word.
“Unbelievable,” Alexander says of Finberg’s 31-point, eight-assist performance against LSU that December night. “He was unbelievable. There were a lot of people that couldn’t believe that a kid from Columbia Falls, Montana could do that against LSU.”
Finberg’s entire career was something of a running highlight reel. He scored 1,473 points in his Bobcat career, seventh-most in school history, but is also among the school’s all-time leaders in field goals, shots, free throws, free throw attempts, and free throw percentage. Most impressively, Finberg is the second in school history in assists.
“The thing everyone remembers about Craig was that he scored a lot of points, then you look at the records and see that he’s one of the school’s all-time leaders in assists. He did so many things well, and then you start to think how many more points he would have had if we played with a three-point line then. He was an amazing player.”
