The May 3, 1998 edition of the Eugene Register-Guard’s sports page captured the spirit of Miquel Galeana.
Arms raised, tongue sticking out and a smile ear-to-ear as No. 479 crossed the finish line after winning the Oregon Invitational steeplechase, and en route, automatically qualifying for the NCAA championship.
“Miguel loved to compete,” says MSU head coach Dale Kennedy. “He was a terrific kid from humble beginnings who worked hard, was an intense trainer who possessed great charisma.”
Galena went on to become a two-time All American (1997, 1998) performer in the steeplechase. He was also a five-time Big Sky Conference champion and left MSU with the school record in the mile and steeplechase.
“He was our leader both in cross country and track,” Kennedy said. “He was a great competitor who was quick with a smile, easy and fun.”
From the beginning of his cross country career in the fall of 1993 to the end of his record-breaking '98 senior season, Galeana’s competitive spirit embodied what it means to be a Bobcat.
