Tony Storti- Football, ‘59
It’s not hard to pinpoint exactly when Montana State’s remarkable run of football success began. It happened in early 1952, when Toni Storti took over a program that had won 14 games in the previous six seasons. And although Storti’s success wasn’t immediate- his first two Bobcat squads were 2-5 and 4-4- it was lasting. In 1954, MSU was 8-1, the school’s first winning record since 1946 and only its second in 24 years. After leaving the program for a year, Storti returned in 1956 to lead MSU to a 9-0-1 mark and its first-ever national championship. The next year, his final season, his team was 8-2. Beginning with Storti’s second season, MSU enjoyed a 16-year run of 104-54-4. After losing his first two games to Montana, he snapped MSU’s eight-game skein to UM with three straight triumphs.
