MSU netters begin Senior Weekend in style

Montana State opened its final regular season weekend with one of its strongest performances, posting a 7-0 sweep over Northern Colorado in men's tennis on Friday.

The Bobcats won the doubles point by allowing the Bears to take only three games, then surrendered just one set in singles competition to seal the victory. “The guys are playing well right now,” said Bobcat coach Mike Phillips, whose team raised its record to 6-15, 2-4 in Big Sky play, with the victory. Northern Colorado falls to 2-13 overall, 0-6 in the league.

Montana State opened the match by cruising to the doubles point. Alberto Fuentes teamed with Fletcher Keyes and Pawel Turzanski combined with Corey Smith in posting 8-1 wins, while Esteban Ferrero and Myles Perkins earned an 8-3 victory. “It's really important to get that doubles point,” Phillips said, “and our doubles teams are playing well. We're playing clean, smart tennis.”

Smith, one of the team's three seniors honored prior to the match, and Keyes led the way with 6-1, 6-0 victories in the no. two and three singles matches. Alberto Fuentes led 6-1, 0-6, 4-0 when Northern Colorado's Connor Buchanan defaulted because of unsportsmanlike behavior. Seniors Esteban Ferrero (6-3, 6-2 over Travis Day) and Myles Perkins (6-2, 6-4 over Andre Lepine) also earned wins before Pawel Turzanski won a 6-1, 7-6 (7) victory over Calix Van Lier at no. one singles to cap the day, coming back from a 5-3 deficit.

“The player Pawel beat is a very good player, and it's always good to get a win at no. one singles,” Phillips said.
