MSU rallies for 'exciting' 4-3 win
Montana State dropped the doubles point but Diego Campos and Lander Jewett won marathon singles matches to lead MSU to a come-from-behind 4-3 Big Sky win at Northern Arizona on Saturday.
Campos, playing no. four singles, and Jewett at no. five, each earned three-set wins to spur the Bobcat rally. Campos dropped the first set tie-breaker 7-3, then won the second set tie-breaker 7-4 before cruising to a 6-1 win in the finale. Jewett fell 7-3 in the first set tiebreaker before topping NAU's Robert Martin 6-4 in the second set. The two then staged a memorable third set, with Jewett prevailing 8-6 in the tie-breaker.
“It was a very exciting match,” said MSU coach Mike Phillips. “We dug ourselves a hole by losing the doubles point, but give our guys credit for fighting back. They never gave up.”
Montana State sealed the win with wins at the top two singles spots. Niklas Brandes cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 win over Robin Pezzutto, while Markus Schleuter came from behind to beat Shaun Waters 1-6, 7-5, 6-3.
The Bobcats raised their league record to 2-0 with the win, leveling the team's season mark at 7-7. Montana State continues Big Sky road play next weekend, playing at Idaho State on March 30 and Weber State on March 31 before visiting nationally-ranked Boise State on April 2.
