Montana State battled the elements and had four take first in an event to wrap up the back-to-back day meet in Utah
OGDEN, Utah – The meet may have been shortened due to a mix of weather mother nature threw at the Montana State track and field teams, but the Bobcats took advantage early for solid showings across the board to conclude the Utah/Weber State Spring Classic Saturday, April 8, at Stewart Stadium.
"I thought we really made progress again from our first couple weeks of meets as we continue our preparation in training and competition to get ready for the conference championships," Montana State head coach Dale Kennedy said. "We had multiple numbers of lifetime and season bests over the two days."
Senior Jacquline Verlanic, juniors Kyle Douglass and Calvin Root and sophomore Alyssa Snyder all finished with top marks in an event to lead the Bobcats to a combined four first-place finishes.
Snyder completed the 5,000-meter run in a time of 17 minutes, 11 seconds. That time – converted to 16:45.46 due to altitude – moves her up to sixth in the event all-time in program history.
Verlanic earned the top mark in the women's hammer throw by completing a toss of 182-03 (55.55m).
Douglass and Root both moved up to second on the Big Sky Conference men's performance list while placing first in the discus and hammer throws, respectively. Douglass completed a throw of 173-01 (52.76m) and Root tossed the hammer 189-02 (57.66m).
Alex Lewis, Callen Crawford, Hailey Phillips and Christie Schiel each earned runner-up finishes during the second day of competition.
Lewis completed the men's triple jump by leaping 44-06 (13.56m). Crawford finished the hammer throw in second place with a mark of 172-11 (52.72m), Phillips crossed the line in a personal-best 1:03.25 in the 400 hurdles and Schiel led MSU in the 1,500 by completing a time of 4:37.68.
Earning top-five finishes on the women's side were McKenna Ramsay, Lindsay Benson and Cailyn Schroeder. Benson, Kendra Larson and Madison Liechty each finished in the top 10 while also setting a lifetime best in an event during the day.
Leading MSU on the men's side in their respective events were Jadin Casey (200), Cameron Carroll (1,500) and Christopher Lange (400 hurdles). Carroll notched a personal-best time of 4:00.63 while Alec Nehring also set a lifetime best to take fourth in the discus with his throw of 157-09 (48.08m).
The two relay events scheduled to wrap up the Saturday portion of the meet were canceled due to a mix of lightning and rain.
"The kids battled weather yesterday obviously with all of the wind and some of the events were really enhanced thanks to it while others weren't certainly helped by it," Kennedy said. "Today, we faced pretty darn good conditions during the whole meet weather-wise until the end. I think the kids took advantage of it."
Montana State will have select individuals head to California next for the Mt. SAC Relays, Beach Invitational and Bryan Clay Invitational over a four-day span from April 12-15. The Bobcats follow that with two straight meets in Missoula, Mont., before hosting their final regular season meet on May 5.
