Freshman seals victory to push Montana State to 2-0 in Big Sky play
Joaquim Espinoza recorded a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles to boost Montana State to a 4-3 win at Idaho State in Big Sky Conference men's tennis action on Saturday.
The win by Espinoza, a freshman, capped a comeback effort by the Bobcats after MSU dropped the doubles point and the first singles match. Kasper Parlklo won at No. 3 singles to get MSU into the win column, then in short succession Adrian Torrico won a 6-3, 2-6, 6-0 match at No. 4 and Rok Sitar won a 7-6 (7-0), 4-6, 6-2 grinder at No. 4.
"The guys played great today," said MSU coach Jared Burnham, "and Adrian and Rok really showed some resolve in their matches. It took some poise for the freshman (Espinoza) to get a win with the match riding on it. I proud of how they played today."
.
The win was Montana State's second of the season, but also its second in conference play to raise the team's record to 2-0 in the Big Sky (2-5 overall). The Bengals are 3-5 overall, 1-2 in the league. MSU's next match is Friday at home against Montana in non-conference action.
