Bobcats Shine in MSU Spring Rodeo First Performance

Four Montana State student-athletes grab event leads on Thursday
BOZEMAN, Montana – Montana State's Molly Salmond and Bella Fossum traded places in two events Friday, and the net result that each led one of the in the first performance of the 2022 MSU Spring Rodeo in Worthington Arena on Friday.

Fossum marked a 2.8 seconds in the breakaway roping to finish just ahead of Salmond's 2.9. In the barrel racing Salmond's 15.00 seconds nipped Fossum's 15.02 to take the lead in that event after the first session.

"Overall I think it went well," said first-year Bobcat coach Kyle Whitaker. "It was the first rodeo of the year so there were kinks to work out, but I was happy with how things went. I think Bella and Molly passing the other to each lead one event was pretty impressive."

Bobcat Nate Dearhammer scored a 73 in the bareback riding, one of two athletes to mark in that event. UM Western's Trevor Kay scored 65. Montana State's Hailey Garrison leads the goat tying (6.8 seconds) entering Friday. Slack runs throughout the day, with the championship short go at 7 pm. The weekend's second rodeo begins Saturday with slack throughout the day and the performance at 7 pm. Sunday's championship short go is at 1 pm.

"It was fun to see the crowd and hear the enthusiasm," Whitaker said. "I thought it was a great crowd for a Thursday night and I'm excited for the weekend."
