Adam Jones, a product from Missoula, raced for 197 yards and a pair of touchdowns as Montana State rolled to a 34-11 win over Montana in Saturday's annual Brawl of the Wild in Bozeman.
The game was the final regular season contest for both teams and left second-ranked MSU alone atop the Big Sky Conference at 8-0 and an overall record of 12-0 for the first time in program history. As conference champions, the Bobcats have a bye in the first round of the playoffs before hosting a game the first full weekend of December.
The Bobcats got out to an early 7-0 lead as senior quarterback Tommy Mellott reached the end zone from the 4-yard line, the only score in the first quarter. A field goal by UM's Ty Morrison cut it to 7-3, but the Bobcats finished the first half with a 35-yard scoring pass from Mellott to Rohan Jones and field goals of 27 and 49 yards by Myles Sansted, making it 20-3 at halftime. Jones now has eight touchdown receptions this season and Mellott has 22 scoring passes. Mellott's running score was his 11th of the season and 39th of his outstanding career.
For the game, Mellott completed six of 12 passes for 94 yards. In addition to the score to Rohan Jones, Mellott also connected with Taco Dowler on a 36-yard pass.
Adam Jones' first score came late in the third quarter to make it 27-3. Preceding that score came the play of the game, an 88-yard burst by Jones from deep in MSU's own territory.
Moments after Jones' score, the weather changed with strong winds and swirling snow that turned a balmy November afternoon into typical seasonal weather.
An Eli Gillman score cut into MSU's lead, but Jones iced the game late in the fourth quarter with his second touchdown sending the 22,057 in attendance home happy.
The Bobcats rolled up 326 yards on the ground, the most against the Grizzlies this season and Jones' yardage was the fourth most by a Bobcat in the series history.
But it was the MSU defense that was the real difference in the game, holding UM to season lows in points, total yards (234), passing yards (117) and first downs (13). Overall, MSU had the ball for nearly 35 minutes to 25 for the Grizzlies (8-4, 5-3). UM will probably host a playoff game next weekend.
Rylan Ortt, another Missoula product, led MSU with 11 tackles. McCade O'Reilly and Neil Daily were in on five tackles each. Kenneth Eiden, Paul Brott and Zac Crews (also from Missoula) combined for a pair of quarterback sacks. Logan Fife completed 18 of 34 passes. Gillman and Nick Ostmo led the Grizzlies rushing attack with 35 yards each.
