BOZEMAN, Montana – Montana State clinched the Big Sky Region men's and women's team championships on Saturday, advancing seven 12 student-athletes to the 2024 College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyoming, June 9-15, 2024.
The Bobcats scored 880 points in the men's competition to win the University of Montana rodeo in Hamilton, while the women's team won with 385 points. "We did really good," said MSU head coach Kyle Whitaker. "I was really happy with how it went. Of the 10 rodeos this spring (five each for the men and women) we won nine, so it was a good spring."
The Bobcats won one of the six men's events at UM, with Traver Johnson taking top honors in the steer wrestling. The team piled up points with its depth in roping events, though, finishing 2-3-4-6 in the tie-down roping and 1-2-3-4-5 in the steer wrestling. Johnson also finished second in tie-down roping, taking top honors in all-around, while Cole Gerhardt finished second in bareback and steer wrestling.
Montana State's women also won one event in Missoula, with Cassidy Bolich topping the breakaway roping standings. Three Bobcats scored points in breakaway with four each in goat tying and barrel racing. Shantell Brewer finished third in the standings of both barrel racing and breakaway roping.
Seven members of the Bobcat men's team advanced to the CNFR: Monte Bailey (saddle bronc), Cole Gerhardt (bareback, steer wrestling), Wyatt Jensen (tie-down roping), Traver Johnson (steer wrestling), Wes Shaw (bareback, tie-down roping), Bode Spring (tie-down roping), and Jaden Whitman (steer wrestling). On the women's side, five Bobcats move on to Casper: Meghan McGinley (breakaway roping), Alexis McDonald (barrel racing), Tayla Moeykens (barrel racing, breakaway roping), Breyer Newman (goat tying), and Jessica Stevens (goat tying).
