MSU looks for top five team finishes
One more run.
That's all Tayla Moeykens has as a college barrel racer, and the senior from Three Forks closes her legendary Bobcat career Saturday night chasing the second national championship and third top finish in her four years at MSU. Moeykens stands second in the barrel racing entering the championship go of the 2024 CNFR, with 41.72 seconds on three runs after winning the third go on Friday by posting a 13.70. The 2021 national champion, Moeykens chases defending champ Taycie Matthews, who leads with 41.66 on three.
"I'm really excited for Tayla and hoping she can win barrels tonight," MSU coach Kyle Whitaker said. "It's just amazing how well she's done here in Casper through the years."
Moeykens' 13.70 was the best mark of the week, and she made up 0.22 seconds on Matthews, who posted a 13.92 in the third go. Moeykens has now finished in the top five in nine of her 14 career runs at the CNFR, posting sub-14.00 times five times. Her next barrel racing run comes during Friday's performance, which begins at 7 pm MT. She finished fifth among the 14 athletes who competed in breakaway roping in Tuesday's performance.
Four other Bobcats compete in Saturday's championship round. Trav Johnson is currently fourth in the steer wrestling with teammate Jaden Whitman fifth. Wyatt Jensen and Bode Spring are tied for sixth in tie-down roping. The event begins at 7 pm MT at the Ford Wyoming Center in Casper, Wyoming. The event is available on ESPN3, with results available here.
"I'm really hoping that we can move into the top five in team in both men's and women's," Whitaker said. "We've got work to do, but each of those kids are capable."
Montana State's men's team stands 17th entering the final go with 195 points. Clarendon College leads with 530, Western Oklahoma is second with 490, Tarleton State 410, and Casper College 365. The women's team is fifth with 440 points, chasing Tarleton State (440), Texas A&M (397), West Alabama (395) and Cal Poly (212.5).
