Dima Bezborodov earns singles victory at top ladder spot
Montana State fell 6-1 to UC San Diego in men's tennis on Saturday in a match featuring several close individual matches.
Grad student Dmitry Bezborodov accounted for MSU's lone victory by earning a 6-2, 7-6 decision at No. 1 singles for his team-best third win against a Division I opponent this season. The Bobcats dropped the doubles point to open the contest, but MSU's Eddie Biss and Yassin Elaroussy led 6-5 when their match at No. 2 was abandoned because the point had been decided.
"This was one of those matches that the score doesn't truly tell the story," said MSU head coach Mateus Ceolin of the match played at Grand Canyon University's courts. "You win a few important points here and there and the final score could have been completely different."
Four Bobcats played three sets in singles defeats. UCSD's Pelayo Rodriguez beat Andre Stewart 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 3, while Robert Freedman topped MSU's Harrison Janes 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 at the sixth ladder spot. In the match of the day, Bobcat freshman Camille Chantron fought to a 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (7-5 tie-breaker) loss at No. 4 singles.
"Today was another incredible show of heart by our guys," Ceolin said. "UCSD had their soccer and volleyball teams out at the match and our guys did not shy away from that. They fought hard and matched the energy of people in the stands for UCSD."
Montana State falls to 1-6 on the season with Saturday's loss. The Bobcats face Hawaii on Sunday at 10 am. The Rainbows enter the contest with a 1-7 record after Saturday's 4-3 loss to Grand Canyon. Live stats are available here.
"I'm looking forward to another opportunity tomorrow against another very good team," Ceolin said.
