Offense, Defense Both Provide Highlights During Sonny Holland Spring Classic

Colson Coon rushes for 161 yards
BOZEMAN, Mont. (April 26, 2025) – Montana State rushed for 228 yards and threw for 317, but the team's defensive units intercepted three passes and during one stretch forced five consecutive three-and-out possessions as the White team beat the Blue 24-14 in the Sonny Holland Spring Classic on Saturday in sunny Bobcat Stadium.
Fifth-year head coach Brent Vigen was pleased with the competitiveness of his team's scrimmages throughout the spring session. "Any time we came out and scrimmaged, today included, generally speaking there was enough back and forth that you feel good about both sides being in the fight and going after it," he said.
Running back Colson Coon gained 161 yards while Jared White rambled for 70 as the only two available at that position. "It was apparent offensively the ability to run the football was there," Vigen said. "We only had one (running back) on each side, so that was tempered a little on the play-calling side. Colson, when given opportunities, continued to shine. This spring was a really good opportunity for Jared, at the same time, to make his mark."
With sophomores Chance Wilson and Patrick Duchien getting most of the snaps at quarterback, the passing offense proved efficient. Bobcat signal callers combined to complete 34 of 51 passes for 317 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
MSU's pass defense also proved effective. The Cats picked off three passes, two by freshman cornerback Carson Williams and one by safety Bryant Meredith. "I think our secondary's coming around," Vigen said. "I think the young group of corners made significant strides through the course of spring and they're obviously going to be called on big-time during the fall."
The Blue team came out of the gates firing, marching 65 yards on 10 plays. Wilson connected with Javonte King on 20-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring. On the White's first possession, the Blue defense got a fourth down stop at midfield to set up the Blue with a short field. Wilson connected with Jacob Trimble on a 47-yard pass on first down, then Coon plunged in from three yards out to stretch the lead to 14-0.
On the White's next drive, Duchien engineered a 75-yard scoring drive. He completed all five of his passes, connecting with Jared White on a 13-yard touchdown. At that point the defenses took over. The Blue team got a stop near midfield, then five consecutive possessions ended in three-and-outs leading to halftime.
Neither team scored until early in the fourth quarter, when Myles Sansted's 34-yard field goal got the White team on the scoreboard. The first of Williams' interceptions set up a touchdown drive that ended with a five-yard Coon run, trimming the Blue lead to 14-10.
The White defense then got a fourth-down stop at the Blue 26, and runs by Coon of 14 yards and Jabez Woods of 10 for a touchdown gave the White team a touchdown.
Vigen was happy to close spring drills on a high note, springboarding into the off-season. "The spring game is the end of spring and it's always a pivot point for your calendar year," he said. "The work that we put in on the field this spring is behind us now, and where we are as a team will become much clearer."
Preseason practice for the 2025 campaign officially begins on July 31.
