GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Lauren Greeny carded eight birdies on the way to a 5-under-par round of 67 on Monday, leading Montana State women's golf on the opening day of the Bobcat Desert Classic at Golf Club of Estrella in Goodyear, Arizona.
Greeny, a junior out of Pullman, Washington, ties the second-lowest round in program history with the performance after a morning that featured five birdies on her first eight holes and four in a row from the fifth to the eighth holes.
Greeny set the school record earlier this season with a 6-under-par round of 66 at the GCU Invitational in Phoenix on Feb. 26.
The two-time tournament champion now owns seven of the 12 all-time rounds of 67 or better by a Bobcat.
Montana State shot 3-over-par 291 as a team and sits fourth out of ten teams through 18 of 54 holes.
"We definitely started slower than we wanted but finished with a couple birdies and good pars," head coach Brittany Basye said. "What was in the middle is a mixture of numbers from all seven players. Greeny had a great first round and was striking the ball very well. Scarlet was steady all day making solid up and downs. We need four scores for our team to have a decent chance at winning. We need to go out tomorrow with a solid game plan, deep focus and remember to stay positive."
Idaho leads the field with a 2-under-par 286. Utah Tech and Weber State are tied for second at even par shooting 288.
"It's warm and tomorrow we will be in the heat of it so staying hydrated will be key as well," Basye said. "We have two rounds left and they will fight hard to keep playing and competing."
Right behind Greeny was teammate Scarlet Weidig, who shot a 1-under-par 71 to sit tied for eighth entering Tuesday's second round.
The native of Belen Heredia, Costa Rica, carded two birdies both before and after the turn as part of a balanced morning.
Becca Tschetter shot a 76 and Eva Heinz shot a 77 to round out the scorers for the Cats on Monday.
Competing as an individual, Hannah Boraas carded a 75.
Montana State tees off in the second round on Tuesday starting at 9:50 a.m. PT/10:50 a.m. MT.
