Montana State turns in complete team performance during second round in Goodyear to position themselves for climactic final 18 holes at home tournament
GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Montana State golf powered through warm temperatures in Arizona on Tuesday to card a 1-under-par 287 and surge towards the top of the leaderboard ahead of Wednesday's final round at the Bobcat Desert Classic in Goodyear, Arizona.
The 287 represents the second-best round of the season for the Bobcats and is tied for the ninth-best round in program history.
Entering the final 18 holes of the tournament, Montana State (+2) stands knotted with Idaho (+2) for second and is just one stroke behind first-place Weber State (+1).
Those three teams will battle it out for the team crown on Wednesday after creating a 12-stroke gap between the top group and the next-closest squad, Utah Tech (+12).
"All season we are playing to put ourselves in a position to win tournaments, both as a team and individually," head coach Brittany Basye said. "Today these ladies have done that, and now they need to go out tomorrow and keep competing, playing hard and with a good mindset. We got five scores under 74, that is a good day!"
The Bobcats were led on Tuesday by sophomore Eva Heinz, who dominated Golf Club of Estrella on the front-nine en route to a 32 while carding four birdies.
Playing in her hometown of Goodyear, Heinz finished with a 3-under-par 69 on the day, the fourth time she's gone 69 or better as a Bobcat.
Heinz was the biggest riser of the day across the tournament field, climbing 22 spots into a tie for tenth through two rounds.
Elsewhere, Lauren Greeny followed up Monday's scorching round of 5-under-par 67 with a solid 1-over-par 73 across her second 18 holes.
The junior sits in a three-way tie for second place (-4) on the individual leaderboard entering the final round, three strokes behind Idaho's Zoe Newell (-7).
The two-time tournament champion will join Newell, Weber State's Jade Gruher (-4), and Idaho's Emma Kang (-4) in the final foursome on Wednesday.
Maddie Montoya carded an even-par 72 to check in as the No. 2 Bobcat on Tuesday. The junior from Boise, Idaho, climbed 15 spots and sits in a tie for 25th individually.
Becca Tschetter, a graduate student from Minot, North Dakota, finished with a 1-over-par 73 to rise four spots up to 22nd.
"Eva had it going with her front nine, Maddie played very consistent, then we had Hannah Greeny and Becca holding strong at 1-over-par," Basye said.
Competing individually, sophomore Hannah Boraas carded a 1-over-par 73. After shooting a 75 on Monday, the native of Alexandria, Minnesota, is tied for 18th overall.
Wednesday's final round is slated to begin with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. PT/8:30 a.m. MT. Live scoring will be carried on Scoreboard, powered by Clippd.
"I'm proud of them for playing hard today and achieving team goals for the day," Basye said. "We need a good finish tomorrow with all seven players contributing."
Montana State is looking for their first tournament win since 2002, and their first-ever tournament win competing against a field of more than eight teams.
