Bobcats host Big Sky Region to launch 'marathon/sprint' through the spring season
BOZEMAN, Montana – One of college rodeo's most anticipated events arrives in Bozeman this weekend when Montana State hosts its annual Spring Rodeo April 10-13 in Worthington Arena.
"The kids are excited to be back in the Brick and competing in front of the hometown crowd," said Bobcat head coach Kyle Whitaker. "They talk about it all year, and it's been a long winter. Our last rodeo was the last weekend in September, so we've put in a lot of work during the off-season and we're ready to get back to action."
The action begins on Thursday at 7 pm inside Brick Breeden Fieldhouse, with the weekend's first rodeo concluding on Friday with the 7 pm Championship Go. Saturday's 7 pm performance and Sunday's 1 pm Championship Go highlight the second rodeo. Ticket information is available at msubobcats.com/tickets.
Bobcat sophomore Michaela McCormick, who leads the Big Sky Region in women's all-around, said the excitement for MSU's Spring Rodeo begins building once the fall season ends in September. "The Brick is always the funnest rodeo of the year," she said. "The atmosphere is crazy and everyone has so much fun at the Fieldhouse."
Montana State leads the men's and women's standings in the Big Sky Region after four rodeos. MSU's 3,613.0 points on the men's side is more than 1,000 more than second-place UM Western (2,607.0), while the Bobcat women (1,306.16) out-pace Montana (965.5).
With a six-month gap between the fall and spring collegiate rodeo seasons in the Treasure State, Whitaker said a fast start to the hybrid "marathon-sprint" of the spring season is crucial. "They know we want to be number one in the standings," he said, "but we don't really talk about that a whole lot. We talk about our performance. You've got to have your maximum performance every time out and the standings will take care of itself. But what we emphasize all winter is, 'This is the Brick. This is our house. And we want to sweep the team titles.'"
While McCormick leads the Big Sky women's all-around standings, Montana State holds the top four spots in the men's all-around. Cole Gerhardt is first, Wes Shaw second, Holden Atkinson third and Cole Detton fourth. In individual events, Shantell Brewer leads the barrel racing, Brynn Morgan the breakaway roping, Mitch Detton the tie-down roping, Cole Detton the steer wrestling, Cole Gerhardt the bareback riding and Monte Bailey the saddle bronc riding.
"I'm looking forward to watching every single one of them," Whitaker said of the many standouts on both the men's and women's teams. "There are just so many of them that had a good fall and then a really good winter in the weight room and the practice arena."
The spring season's brevity calls for the region's cowboys and cowgirls to get a quick start and build on it, Whitaker said. "We haven't even started yet and we're done in a month. We have to be ready and then click on all cylinders and keep it rolling."
For ticket information, visit msubobcats.com/tickets. The rodeo streams live on the Cowboy Channel app and airs live on the Scripps network across Montana.
