Cats take commanding regional lead into finale
BOZEMAN, Mont. (May 1, 2025) – Just days away from the Big Sky Region regular season's end, the Montana State rodeo teams head to Missoula this weekend with a commanding lead in the regional standings and in strong position nationally.
The Bobcats lead the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association men's standings by nearly 1,000 points over Mid-Plains Community College of Nebraska and New Mexico State. The MSU women currently hold down 10th place. Cole Gerhardt leads the men's all-around standings nationally.
Montana State has a stranglehold on both the men's and women's Big Sky Region standings. MSU leads the men's competition by over 3,000 points with one rodeo remaining, while the Bobcat women's lead by more than 500 points in the women's standings. UM Western is second in both.
Individual event standings tell a similar tale. Bobcats lead four of the five individual men's events and hold down the top six spots in the men's all-around standings, while MSU leads two of the three women's events and stand 1-2-4 in the women's all-around.
The Bobcats enjoyed mixed success at Miles City last weekend. In the weekend's first rodeo, UM Western captured top honors in both team events. That marked the first time in 2024-25 MSU's men failed to win a Big Sky Region rodeo. The Cats turned things around in Rodeo #2, winning both team competitions and sweeping the eight individual events plus team roping.
While the Big Sky Region team competitions don't hold much drama entering the regular season finale on Friday and Saturday in Missoula, a single rodeo at the Missoula County Fairgrounds, several individual events feature high stakes.
The top three individuals in each event after the 10 2024-25 Big Sky Region rodeos qualify for the College National Finals Rodeo in June. The steer wrestling features eight Bobcats in the top 10 vying for those three coveted spots. Faith Marshall, Jessica Stevens and Haven Wolstein stand 3-4-5 in the goat tying, the most-contested women's event from a Bobcat point of view.
