CASPER, Wyo. (June 16, 2025) – Montana State's Monte Bailey marked a 78 to move into eighth place overall at the midway mark of the second go-round in saddle bronc riding to lead a strong Bobcat effort on day two of the 2025 College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyoming on Monday.
"We had some great performances and a few disappointing ones," said MSU coach Kyle Whitaker. We really want top four finishes and we didn't get a lot of those in the first round. But we do have a lot of contestants who got off to solid starts and we need them to keep that rolling to qualify for the Saturday night short round."
Most of the Bobcat squad got into action on Monday. A pair of MSU steer wrestlers posted top 10 finishes, with Cole Detton's 4.8 good for 8th and Mike Nannini's 5.0 putting him in 10th. Wes Shaw (5.4, 11th) and Cole Detton (6.5, 26th) also posted strong finishes. Wyatt Jensen posted a 12.2 in tie down roping for 16th, and Mitch Detton's 25.6 was good for 32nd.
After Sunday's session featuring breakaway roping on the women's side, MSU's other competitors took the stage on Monday. Annelie McCurry (18th, 14.77) and Shantell Brewer (36th, 19.48) finished runs in barrel racing. In goat tying, Michaela McCormick and Haven Wolstein both marked 6.6 to tie for 8th, while Faith Marshall's 6.7 is 14th.
"I'm proud that we have been competitive in every event and I think some of our rookies will be more relaxed and confident for their next round," Whitaker said.
Slack continues on Tuesday morning, and the rodeo's first public performance is Tuesday at 7 pm in the Ford Wyoming Arena. Each nightly performance airs on ESPN3 for the event's remainder.
