Stewart, Biss earn singles wins in Bobcats’ final home match of 2025-26 season
BOZEMAN, Mont. – The Montana State men's tennis team closed its regular season at the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon, falling to Montana, 5-2, in its final home match of the season.
Andre Stewart's comeback victory on court two and Eddie Biss' sweep on court five highlighted the Bobcats' day in Bozeman. Three of the six singles matches went to three sets in a tough battle between the two teams as Montana State moved to 7-11 overall and 3-4 in Big Sky play.
First of all, thanks to everybody who came out, Montana State head coach Mateus Ceolin said. This was certainly the match where we had the most people out here, and it was awesome. It made an awesome atmosphere. Credit goes to the Griz. They played well, they fought well, they brought the energy, and well done by them. I'm proud of our guys, proud of the fight they showed, proud of how much we've improved from day one this year. All eyes are on the Big Sky Tournament. We will see what we can do down there, and we've just got to keep working and keep getting better.
The Griz earned the doubles point to open the match and take an early 1-0 lead. Montana's Duncan McCall and Baltazar Wiger-Nordas posted a 6-1 win over Andre Stewart and Eddie Biss on court one, while Tom Bittner and Eivind Tandgerg followed with a 6-4 win over Camille Chantron and David Ismanescu on court two to clinch the doubles point for Montana. Montana State's Yassin Elaroussy and Max Calaquian and Montana's Matt Upton and Johnny Wilkinson were knotted at 4-4 on court three before their match went unfinished.
The Griz added their second point of the day with a win court four to open singles play as Upton defeated Chantron, 6-2, 6-3. The Cats and Griz then battled to three sets on each of the top three courts in a match that lasted four hours and 11 minutes. Montana State's Elaroussy fell to Montana's Bittner on court one, 6-4, 3-6, 6-0, as the Griz took a 3-0 lead, but the Cats fought back with a point of their own as Stewart earned a statement win over Wiger-Nordas on court two. After dropping the first set, 6-3, Stewart worked his way back into the match with a 6-4 victory in set two before closing the match with a 6-3 win in the third and final set. Ethan Masselis dropped his three-set battle with McCall, 7-6 (2), 4-6, 6-2, on court three as Montana clinched the match with its fourth point of the day. Biss fought through two tiebreaks to earn his sweep over Joseph Townes on court five, opening his match with a 7-6 (6) win in set one before taking the second set, 7-6 (4) to collect Montana State's second point of the day. Calaquian fell to Wilkinson, 6-2, 6-1, on court six to close out the match.
Montana State awaits the result of Sunday's match between Northern Arizona and Idaho to determine its seeding for the Big Sky Conference Men's Tennis Championship tournament, which takes place at the Phoenix Tennis Center from April 23-25. The Cats are locked into Match 1 between the No. 4 and No. 5 seed to kickstart the tournament on April 23. All matches throughout the weekend will begin at 9 a.m. MT/8 a.m. PT.
