MSU makes second straight smoke-induced switch to KSAC
After a year unlike any other in Montana State football history, the Bobcats prepare for the 2026 season beginning with the first preseason practice on July 30 and culminating with the season opener at Utah Tech on August 29.
THE STRAIGHT SKINNY: Montana State coach Brent Vigen said on Saturday that he wanted to see how his team bounced back after a difficult full week of practice and an off day on Sunday. Monday morning, he saw more than he expected.
"They had good energy today and took another step forward as far as situations and install," Vigen said. "I think one really good thing is that this was practice 10 today, and I don't think we've had a bad practice yet. Not that they've all been perfect, but we've held to a pretty good standard each and every day, and that's what you want to do."
For the second straight practice, the Bobcats woke up with the idea of practicing on the grass before moving indoors as a response to the smoke that is smothering so much of Montana. "A guy gets up thinking he's going to practice on the grass today, and maybe he likes being on the grass a little bit more, then we come inside on the turf to get out of the smoke," Vigen said. "So that's an adjustment, but that's how we're built. We're ready to adapt and take advantage of whatever is in front of us."
D-LINE HELP: A pair of legendary Bobcat defensive linemen visited MSU's practice on Monday. College Football Hall of Famer Bill Kollar, a Bobcat All-America in 1972 and 1973, visited practice, as he often does. And the long-time, legendary NFL assistant coach jumped in to help at his specialty position.
Vigen welcomed the expertise. "You always welcome someone with Bill's presence, not only as a player here but also in the NFL and as one of the most highly respected defensive line coaches in the world. To have him back and lend some wisdom, some of his expertise, his passion for Bobcat football, that's awesome."
Another Bobcat legend also stopped by the Kennedy-Stark Indoor Athletic Center Monday morning. Brad Daly, the 2013 Buck Buchanan Award winner as national defensive player of the year, also visited. Brad's brother Bobby is MSU's defensive coordinator, and his wife Maggie is a former Bobcat track and field standout.
