Duchien, Coon lift Bobcats on Homecoming

Colson Coon and Patrick Duchien made the most of their first starts of the season, sparking Montana State to a tough 28-14 win over Big Sky Conference rival Northern Arizona on Saturday night.

While he never reached the end zone, Coon rushed for a career-best 199 yards while taking the place of the injured Adam Jones as the top-ranked Bobcats' featured back. Overall, MSU (5-0, 2-0) gained 287 yards on the ground and outgained NAU 491-375.

Duchien, filling in for the injured Justin Lamson at quarterback, ran for a pair of touchdowns and threw for another. Duchien celebrated Homecoming in front of 21,857 happy MSU fans, by completing 16 of 20 passes for 204 yards. He added another 77 yards on the ground.

Duchien's scoring pass was to Carter Dahlke, who also made his first start at wide receiver, as an injury kept Taco Dowler on the sidelines. Dahlke, a true freshman, caught 7 passes for 117 yards, including the 47-yard scoring toss from Duchien. All Dahlke's receptions came in the first half.

Dahlke's score put MSU ahead 7-0 in the first quarter, but 18th-ranked NAU scored on a pass from Ty Pennington to Myseth Currie. The Bobcats answered with Duchien's first running score of the night and second in two weeks, but NAU (3-2, 1-1) made it 14-14 at halftime when Pennington found Nassim Isaac on a 32-yard scoring strike just before the half.

Jared White put the Bobcats back on top with a 1-yard burst in the third quarter and Duchien darted around the right end late in the fourth quarter to account for the final score and give MSU its 19th consecutive victory.

Pennington led NAU, which is coached by former MSU assistant Brian Wright, with 239 yards passing on 26 of 38 passes and another 72 yards on the ground.

The Bobcats next game is Friday at Idaho (0-4, 0-1). The team doesn't have another home game until Oct. 24 when Weber State comes to town for an afternoon affair.
