Damschen, Carrie

Carrie Damschen
- Induction:
- 2015
Dale Kennedy wasn't quite sure what he had in Carrie Damschen-Krepps when he stood before a booster group prior to her arrival on campus as a freshman.
"I was asked to speak to a booster group at Valley View," Kennedy recalls, "and I was talking about our new kids and I said, 'We've got this Damschen girl from Helena and I think she's going to be a sleeper.' She had good marks, but they were modest marks, not anything that would indicate she was going to go to the moon."
After the meeting, a gentleman introduced himself.
"It was Barry Damschen, Carrie's dad," Kennedy says with a laugh. "I've never been so embarrassed in my life."
It didn't take long for embarrassment to turn to elation. Damschen established herself not only as an outstanding hurdler - her specialty - but as an incredibly versatile performer. "She was a national-caliber hurdler," Kennedy says. "She made it all the way to the NCAA (Championships). But her ability in the sprints and the relays really made her a key cog on those Big Sky Championship teams (indoors in 2001, outdoors in 2003)."
Damschen was a two-time Big Sky Champion in the 400-meter hurdles outdoors, and was a six-time All-Big Sky selection. She served as a team captain and finished her career on six MSU all-time record lists.
