“What Cass meant to the program is immeasurable. Her accolades speak for themselves, and she is an outstanding ambassador for Montana State. She is one of the most complete post players I have coached or was privileged to watch.” –Former MSU Coach Judy Spoelstra
Montana State’s women’s basketball program has a legacy of success. The program climbed from its AIAW successes into being a competitive NCAA program within the Big Sky in the late ‘80s, to its back-to-back 21st century conference crowns.
But as long as women’s basketball is played at Montana State, Bobcat fans will always cherish the glorious moment in 1993, when in front of frenzied crowds in Worthington Arena, Montana State beat Montana twice in eight days to win the Big Sky for the first time and advance to the NCAA Tournament.
The player at the center of Montana State’s championship run that season was Cass Bauer, who remains one of the most successful and decorated players in program history.
Bauer is the only Bobcat to play in the WNBA, where she played for a pair of playoff teams, and she also won an ABL championship. She remains the most successful former Big Sky player in American professional women’s basketball.
The Hysham native’s legacy, though, is her accomplishments in the Blue and Gold. In addition to her team’s successes, Bauer was Kodak Honorable Mention All-American, and was MSU’s first-ever Big Sky MVP.
Bauer remains, more than a decade after her career ended, third in scoring, fifth in rebounding, and tied for first in free throws.
