“Marshall brought a lot to Montana State as a professional athletic trainer. And he was a real character, too.” –Tom Parac
Marshall Cook arrived in Bozeman, fresh from the lowlands of Louisianan, in time to keep Montana State’s 1956 national “championship squad in top condition all season,” according to MSC’s ’57 football media guide. Cook was 25-years-old former all-around athlete whose career was cut short, ironically, by injuries. After those injuries, incurred at his alma mater, Southeast Louisiana, he served as the head athletic trainer at that school for three years.
In the summer of 1956, Cook began a long illustrious career at Montana State. He became a national leader in his chosen field, serving as a trainer at the Pan American Olympic Games in Chicago, assistant with the training staff of the Calgary Stampeders, working as an advisor to the Bike Training Room foundation, and serving as a director for the National Athletic Trainers’ Association. But it was in MSU’s athletic training room where cook made a true impact. He was considered a consultant to athletic department personnel and a confidant to student-athletes. Cook left Athletics in 1968, but remained at MSU to teach in the school’s department of physical education.
“Marshall was a real professional in the field of Athletic Training,” said long-time MSU coach and administrator tom Parac. “He was influential in training young people getting into the profession, and he provided leadership in this state by providing quality care for student-athletes.”
