Northern Arizona's quick start was more than the Bobcats could overcome
Northern Arizona rode a torrid start to its fourth straight win, topping Montana State 71-58 in Flagstaff, Ariz., on Thursday.
The Lumberjacks hit eight of their first nine shots, four from behind the arc, to build a 20-4 lead and essentially put the game away in the game's first eight minutes. The Bobcats shot just 15% from the floor in the first half, and the Lumberjacks outrebounded MSU 24-18 in the first half.
Cameron Jones, averaging more than 24 points in his last seven games, scored 22 on Thursday, and added nine rebounds and four assists. Gabe Rogers and DeAngelo Jones add 13 points each. The Lumberjacks hit nine of their 18 three-point attempts, while converting 18 of the team's 22 free throws.
Branden Johnson and Marquis Navarre led the Bobcats with 12 points each, while Will Bynum added 11. Johnson and Bobby Howard each grabbed six boards.
While Montana State forced only 10 Northern Arizona turnovers, the Bobcats gave the ball away only five times. MSU has turned the ball over less than 10 times on nine occasions this season, including just 13 in its last two games.
Each team stands 11-9 overall after the NAU victory. The loss drops Montana State to in Big Sky play, while NAU climbed over .500 at 5-4 in the conference.
