The Vandals shot 54% in the first half and 48% for the game, holding the Bobcats to 36% shooting. The game marked MSU's sixth straight below 40% shooting.
“Their physicality was a big issue for us tonight,” said MSU coach Brad Huse. “That made it hard for us to get stops in the first half, when we were struggling offensively. They got it in deep on us.”
After a Bobby Howard layup gave the Bobcats a 4-2 lead, Idaho scored 11 straight points and 19 of the next 21 to grab a 21-6 lead. Five different Vandals scored in that 19-2 run.
The Bobcats hit only one shot in nine attempts during that time, a fast break dunk by Danny Piepoli. “Unfortunately when we struggle offensively, we miss a few early shots and everyone drops their shoulders a little bit. For us to have success in these next three games we'll have to fight through that. But the big thing tonight was that we couldn't get stops.”
Howard scored 19 points to lead the Bobcats, grabbing five rebounds, as well. Rod Singleton scored 10 points for the Cats. Kyle Barone scored 15 points off the bench to lead Idaho, while Brandon Wiley added 13.
Montana State travels to the Northwest next weekend, facing Eastern Washington in Cheney on Thursday.
