The Bobcat women's tennis team swept a doubleheader on Saturday, defeating Portland State and MSU Billings.
The Montana State women's tennis team won two matches, Saturday afternoon in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center, including a crucial 5-2 decision over Big Sky Conference foe Portland State.
In addition, the Bobcats defeated sister school MSU Billings 7-0.
In its conference opener, MSU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead earning the doubles point at Nos. 2 and 3.
Freshman Paulina Lopez pushed the margin to 2-0 with a straight set 6-3, 6-0 victory over PSU's Anya Dalkin at No. 2 singles.
Portland State got on the board at No. 1 singles, where Yuki Sugiyama downed Charlotta Hjalmarsson 7-5, 6-4.
Freshman Wena Tsan notched her first win of the season battling off five set points in a first set tie-breaker 11-9, before closing out Marti Pellicano 7-5 in the second stanza.
Montana State secured the match win at No. 4 singles as Andrea De La Torre posted a straight set 6-1, 6-2 win over Nayanatara Vadali. The Bobcats received their final point at No. 4 singles as freshman Ellie Crum held on for a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 victory over Caitlin Stocking.
“I think any coach would be a little nervous having three freshmen and a sophomore in their top four,” said MSU head coach Denise Albrecht. “But our younger kids really came through against Portland State. I was very proud to get three points out of our newcomers and it was nice to have the match sealed by an upperclassman.”
Against the Yellowjackets, the Bobcats swept all three doubles matches and won all singles contests in straight sets.
Montana State will travel to UC Davis and Sacramento State next weekend.
