Upperclassmen Jaylee Tait and Janelle Reali lead Bobcats to third place in last event of fall schedule
SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Montana State women's golf team garnered third place at the SCU Colby Invitational Tuesday, Nov. 1, behind a third-round 312 for a 935-stroke total at Silver Creek Valley Country Club in the Bobcats' final fall event.
The Bobcats' three rounds of 310, 313 and 312 placed them 10 shots ahead of fourth-place Weber State (945), which trailed MSU by a stroke entering Tuesday. Host Santa Clara won the seven-team Invitational with a 916 (309-297-310) and CSU Northridge finished runner-up at 918 (311-301-306).
MSU junior Jaylee Tait led the Bobcats for the second consecutive tournament by wrapping up the meet in fourth place at 10-over-par 226 (73-78-75). Her total fell just three strokes shy of individual medalist Cake Phuchanbanchob of CSU Northridge and two strokes away from a tie for second.
Senior Janelle Reali completed a strong performance for MSU by taking 11th with a 16-over 232. She fired a 5-over 78 in her third round.
"I'm proud of the way Jaylee and Janelle hung in there, we needed their scores," Montana State head coach Brittany Basye said. "Jaylee earned a fourth place finish behind a strong finish."
Freshman Kelly Hooper tied for 15th by coming in at 236 strokes over two days, including a final round seven-over 79. She finished third on the team scoring list after previously leading the team in events twice and placing second once in her fall debut for the Bobcats.
Freshman Delaney Elliott took 23rd with a score of 241 (81-80-80) and sophomore Natassja Meredith finished 28th (84-82-82) to round out the MSU lineup.
"Overall, I feel we had a good fall," Basye said. "I wish we could have kept shooting under 80 like we did the first part of our fall. We need to figure out how to play to not make mistakes. I see players being tentative when they don't need to be. We got seven players in the lineup this fall and that's a plus for experience, now it will come down to who wants it the most and can finish strong for our team.
"This is a talented team and I can't wait to see what the spring holds for us."
The Bobcats return to action in the spring when MSU travels to Sedona, Ariz., for the Red Rocks Invitational on March 3, 2017.
