Three players shoot in the 70s Tuesday to lead the Bobcats to an eighth-place finish at the MSU-hosted Bobcat Desert Invitational
GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Three Montana State golfers shot in the mid 70s to lead a steady lineup to an eighth-place finish at the Bobcat Desert Invitational Tuesday, April 11, at the Golf Club of Estrella.
The Montana State women's golf team held strong after sharing a tie for eighth following the first day of play by firing a 308 in the third round for a total of 932. MSU topped McNeese State (933) by one stroke and was just four off seventh-place finisher CSU Bakersfield (928).
Cal Poly earned the team title by shooting an 878, 15 strokes better than last season's first-place finisher at the MSU-hosted tournament. Portland State placed second with a two-day total of 893.
"Overall, I'm happy with how we finished today," Montana State head coach Brittany Basye said. "We definitely played more consistent. We didn't start off as good, but then we got back on track which shows that they grinded it out. That to me is the most positive thing I see going into conference.
"We got some birdies as the round progressed. We just need to look at our stats over the next week and then figure out what we need to practice on."
Freshman Delaney Elliott continued her strong play by leading the Bobcats in the final round with a 3-over-par 75. She finished as MSU's individual meet leader with a 12-over 228 to tie for 21st.
Senior Janelle Reali and junior Jaylee Tait earned back-to-back round scores to help pace the Bobcats to the eighth-place showing. Reali notched a second consecutive 76 for a 17-over 233 and moved up to finish tied for 29th. Tait carded her second straight 77 for a three-round 237 and tied for 35th overall.
Freshmen Coral Schulz and Kelly Hooper shot 80 and 81, respectively, Tuesday. Hooper (239) completed the tournament in a tie for 42nd and Schulz (242) finished in a tie for 51st.
Cal Poly's Sophie Bergland earned individual medalist honors by completing the tournament at 4-under-par 212. She was followed by teammate Desiree Gillaspy and Portland State's Tara Finigan. The two tied for second at 2-over 218.
Montana State wrapped up its regular season at the Bobcat Desert Invitational. The Bobcats head to Boulder City, Nev., for the 2017 Big Sky Conference Championship. Play begins on April 21 and concludes on April 23.
"I think the biggest thing about the conference championship is that we all have to be clicking on the same day," Basye said. "We can't just have one or two players play well. All five of us have to be playing well. It's going to come down to all five of us if we want to put a really good round together.
"The ultimate goal is how we play at conference. That's what we're playing and practicing for every day."
