Senior Kellen Bates leads Cats in final home match
Kellen Bates is saving his best for last, and for the Montana State men's tennis team it's right on time.
Bates, a Kalispell product and Montana State's lone senior, capped an unbeaten weekend with a 6-3, 6-4 singles win at No. 1 against Weber State's Shao-Po Yin, and when Rok Sitar won a 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (11-9 in the tiebreaker) nail-biter at No. 2 the Bobcats had clinched the match and a berth in the Big Sky Conference Men's Tennis Tournament next week.
"I thought we took a step forward this weekend," Bobcat coach Jared Burnham said, "and Kellen really played well. He had a great weekend and he led us today."
Adrian Torrico also contributed to the victory, winning 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4 singles to provide Sitar the opportunity to clinch the match. Kasper Parlklo won a three-set decision at No. 5.
The Bobcats started the day on a positive note, winning the doubles point. Torrico and Bates combined to win at No. 2, while Parlklo and Dylan Harvala won at No. 3. The Bobcats finish the regular season 7-14 overall, 6-5 in the Big Sky. Weber State takes a 7-12 overall mark, 4-6 in the Big Sky, into Sunday's match at Montana.
