Senior Jaylee Tait and sophomore Kelly Hooper fired consistent back-to-back rounds to lead the Montana State women's golf team through 36 holes at the Bobcat Spring Invitational
GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Senior Jaylee Tait and sophomore Kelly Hooper fired consistent back-to-back rounds to lead the Montana State women's golf team through 36 holes at the Bobcat Spring Invitational on Monday, April 9. Tait and Hooper sit in the top 20 of the individual standings, while MSU is ninth in the team standings following the first day of tournament play at the Golf Club of Estrella.
Tait was MSU's first-round leader by carding a 3-over-par 75, but Hooper led the way for the Bobcats in the next set of 18 holes with a 74. The two each totaled 151 strokes and are tied for 16th overall at 7-over.
"We'll talk about them having the ability to finish in the top 10 tonight," Montana State head coach Brittany Basye said. "They're looking at the scores and know where they are at. That's the biggest thing. This is like a home course for us. They're going to know where they need to hit shots for the pin locations we have tomorrow to get themselves in good positions."
Sophomore Delaney Elliott completed steady rounds for MSU. She shot a 153 (76-77) and is tied for 23rd overall. Junior Clare Dittemore rounded out the Bobcat lineup, improving two strokes between rounds and finishing with a 158 (80-78). Dittemore is tied for 44th in the individual standings.
"They arrived and played consistent golf today," Basye said. "It's been a key for us and I'd say they were consistent today. We've been preaching consistency and they were one or two shots apart each round. We had some putts that didn't drop that were super close that could have fallen in and given us a couple of strokes. Other than that, happy with how they played considering the heat and played 12 hours of golf."
The Bobcats are alone in ninth with a first-day 613 (308-305) and are three strokes behind Big Sky foes Eastern Washington, Northern Colorado and Southern Utah. Grand Canyon leads the team competition with 585 strokes, but the Antelopes are closely trailed by Portland State (588).
Grand Canyon's Alexis Linam leads the individual standings at 3-under 141 (72-69). Teammate Deanna Salvatori and Portland State's Tara Finigan are tied for second with each shooting a 143.
The Montana State golf team continues play at the Bobcat Spring Invitational on Tuesday. The final round of action is set to begin at 8:45 a.m. MDT at the Golf Club of Estrella with live results available at golfstatresults.com
