The University of Portland remained undefeated recording a 25-17, 25-17, 20-25, 25-15 victory over Montana State in the opening-round of the North Portland Marriott Classic on Thursday night in the Chiles Center.
Portland (4-0) outhit Montana State (2-2) .230 to .070 over the first two stanzas, breaking away at the midway mark of each set. The Bobcats responded in the third frame hitting .290 as a unit, sparked by three kills from Natalie Passeck and four blocks via Kelsie White. Leading by one point at the midway mark of the set, MSU rattled off an 8-2 run and never looked back. The fourth set belonged to Portland as the Pilots hit an impressive .462 to put the match away.
"Portland is a very good team," said MSU second-year head coach Daniel Jones. "There's a reason they are 4-0; they ball control well, putting them in system a lot, which makes for a tough night. Again, it's a team that stretched us, and we have to play teams like Portland to learn about ourselves as we are on this season long journey.
"There are areas of growth that we discussed immediately after the match and I will be looking for a response," Jones commented. "The great thing is we know what we need to address and we get another opportunity against LIU Brooklyn."
Passeck, a senior from Parker, Colo., paced the Bobcats with 10 kills, while adding 11 digs for her second double-double of the season. Freshman middle blocker Susanna Sovde added seven kills, while hitting .292. At the net, MSU was led by White with six blocks and Hannah Scott with four. Defensively, libero Allyssa Rizzo notched a team-high 26 digs.
Portland had five players in double-digit kills led by Reghan Pukis with 19.
MSU plays LIU Brooklyn on Friday at 4 p.m. (MST), before closing out the tournament against Wyoming on Saturday.
