Members of the Montana State University track and field program will take part in the MSU Multis Meet beginning on Monday
BOZEMAN, Mont. – Members of the Montana State University track and field program will take part in the MSU Multis Meet beginning on Monday, Jan. 7, inside of Worthington Arena. The Bobcats will have several student-athletes compete in the heptathlon and pentathlon, along with multiple competitors from the University of Montana squad.
The meet will focus on the Bobcats that are expected to participate in the multi events when the Big Sky Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships take place in Bozeman from Feb. 21-23. The women's pentathlon opens competition at 1 p.m. Monday, while the men's heptathlon will last two days with the remaining three events starting at 10 a.m. Tuesday.
The men's field will feature a variety of Bobcats that are anticipated to compete in all seven events of the heptathlon. Noah Martin, Caleb Neth and Wyatt Thompson-Siporen are returners that have collegiate experience in the multis for MSU.
Martin finished third at the Big Sky Indoor Championships a season ago with 4,977 points which was the seventh-best mark in program history. Neth took seventh in the same meet with 4,817 points, which was the ninth most on the MSU all-time top 10 list, followed the effort up by claiming bronze at the Big Sky outdoor meet in May in the decathlon.
Thompson-Siporen will add greater depth to the multis for the Bobcats despite the graduation of three-time all-conference honoree Mason Storm.
Thompson-Siporen made his MSU debut indoors last year by taking runner-up at the conference meet in the pole vault, but sat out the outdoor season as a redshirt. Prior to joining the MSU program, Thompson-Siporen attended UC Santa Barbara where he finished in the top eight at the Big West Conference Outdoor Championships in the decathlon as a freshman. Another addition to MSU's men's multis group is Hunter Nicholson. The freshman from Kalispell, Mont., made multiple trips to the MHSA Class AA State Track and Field meets in the high jump, long jump and triple jump.
"All of the guys are ready to go," said Tom Eitel, Montana State's jumps and multis coach. "Wyatt, Noah and Caleb are all guys that we'd have compete at the conference meet. I'm excited to see Hunter compete to see what he can do because he's pretty talented."
Freshman Lucy Corbett will compete in the pentathlon for the Bobcats' women's team. Corbett advanced to the 2018 Class AA meet in three events and finished a personal-best second in the high jump in her only season competing for Bozeman High School. She's previously competed in the women's heptathlon having participated in the AAU West Coast National Championship and the USATF Junior Olympic Championships.
"Lucy should be ready to go," Eitel said. "We'll decide after this multi if she'll compete in the multi and high jump at the conference meet or just the open high jump."
Both the Montana State men's and women's teams will make their full debuts on Friday, Jan. 11, in Worthington Arena when the Bobcats host the MSU Open.
