The Montana State cross country teams look to repeat their performances from a season ago in their annual home meet when the Bobcats host the MSU Cross Country Classic on Saturday, Sept. 21, at Bridger Creek Golf Course.
Action begins at 9 a.m. in Bozeman when the starting gun goes off for the men's 5-mile race. The women's 3-mile competition follows at approximately 9:45 a.m.
While a select group of Bobcat runners participated in the Carroll College Early Bird Open in Helena on Sept. 6, this Saturday's meet will be the first for a majority of the MSU cross country runners this season.
"The team is really excited," MSU Director of Cross Country Lyle Weese said. "We've had an entire month of training for this meet. We had a few people compete at Carroll a couple weeks ago, but this will be the first meet where we have everybody set and ready to go."
The MSU men's and women's squads each placed first in the team standings at the 2018 meet. The men's side had five Bobcats finish in the top 10 individually led by the 1-2 finish of Ty Mogan and Duncan Hamilton. MSU returns Samantha Kelderman, Gillian Maness and Madison Liechty who all placed in the top 10 overall of the women's individual standings.
This year's meet field will be bolstered by the addition of Utah State. The Aggies' men's and women's teams are ranked eighth and 11th, respectively, in the latest USTFCCCA Mountain Region poll. MSU's men's team is ranked 11th in the coaches' poll, while Idaho State is listed 12th and Montana at 15th.
"It's good to have a strong field especially with Utah State coming up," Weese said. "They have two strong teams and Idaho State and Montana also will be very competitive. We will really be able to get a measuring stick to see where our men's and women's teams are at."
The 2019 MSU Cross Country Classic will be the 43rd edition of the race in Bozeman. After hosting its meet, the Montana State cross country program is slated to appear in three events prior to the Big Sky Championship in Greeley on Nov. 2.
