Cats Fall in Five-Set Thriller

“Losing hurts, especially when you have a nice performance,” said MSU head coach Matt Houk. “We’ll sleep a lot better knowing that we played how volleyball should look like. We gave ourselves a chance. We came up just short.”
Despite having four players in double-digit kills, the Montana State volleyball team came up short in its efforts dropping a 16-25, 29-27, 21-25, 25-20, 15-13 decision to Idaho State on Saturday night in Shroyer Gym. The loss snapped MSU's 10-match winning streak over the Bengals.
Montana State (7-15, 5-6) responded with a gritty performance coming off a lackluster loss to Weber State on Thursday night. Jourdain Kamps and Madilyn Siebler each notched 15 kills to pace the Bobcats while Courtney Weatherby and Joelie Spelts chipped in 11 apiece.

Montana State jumped out early, cruising to an opening set win outhitting Idaho State (18-5, 9-2) .182 to -.024.
ISU turned the table in the second frame taking a 24-19 lead in the late going before MSU responded fighting off five set points to even the contest at 24-all following a Bengal ball handling error. The Bobcats held two set points at 25-24 and 26-25 but ISU closed out the game with a 4-1 run.
MSU got back on track in the third set getting out to an 18-13 advantage and building the margin to 22-16 on a Kamps kill. Siebler finished the frame with her 11th kill of the match.
The Bobcats owned a 16-12 lead in the fourth set following a Kamps kill, but ISU answered with a 7-3 run to even the set at 19-all. The Bengals went on a 6-1 run down the stretch to force a fifth and deciding game.
The final set featured seven ties and three lead changes. The Bobcats had its largest lead at 10-8 following a Jordan Radick kills, but ISU responded with the set tied three times in the waning moments.
The Bengals broke away from 12-all on consecutive kills from Sadie Bluth and Marci Bell. Siebler's 15th kill of the match pulled MSU to within 14-13 but ISU's Jamie Streit closed out the contest.
"We played more like the team we are," Houk said. "The goal now is to play that way consistently. We need to respond with another strong performance next Thursday."
Defensively, the Bobcats were led by libero Lauren Lindseth with 26 digs, while Siebler 18 and Weatherby 14, also hit double-figures. At the net, Kamps matched a career-high ten blocks, while Radick added nine and Spelts five.
Setters Nellie Stevenson and Audrey Hofer dished out 29 and 22 assists, respectively.
ISU was led by Bell with 14 kills and six blocks.
MSU plays at Idaho next Thursday night in Moscow.
