Montana State's ski teams begin the championship portion of its 2024 schedule when it hosts the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association (RMISA) Championships beginning Friday and concluding Sunday morning. The RMISA Championships also double as the NCAA West Regional.
Before the RMISA Championships get under way, a NCAA giant slalom qualifier will run Thursday at Big Sky Resort beginning at 10 a.m. No team scores are kept during the qualifier but individual performances count towards NCAA qualification.
The RMISA alpine events begin Friday, Feb. 23 at Big Sky Resort with giant slalom, and finish Saturday with slalom. Crosscut Mountain Sports Center hosts the Nordic races beginning Saturday with the 7.5km freestyle at 11 a.m. and concluding Sunday with the 20km classic at 9:30 a.m.
Montana State has never captured an RMISA team title. The RMISA was founded in 1950, four years before becoming a sanctioned sport by the NCAA. From 1950-82, a men's champion was awarded. In 1977, women's skiing became an RMISA sport- six years before being recognized by the NCAA. Starting in 1983 when women's sports became part of the NCAA, the sport became coed. Men's and women's scores in both alpine and Nordic disciplines are combined to determine the team champion.
Four-time defending national champion Utah has dominated the RMISA Championships recently winning titles in 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2023. Last season, Montana State finished third behind a strong alpine performance, including three men- Gianluca Boehm, Henry Heaydon, Dawson Yates- placing in the top five in slalom.
Boehm,a sophomore from Samedan, Switzerland, is currently ranked first in giant slalom and fifth in slalom, while Kristiane Bekkestad leads the Bobcat women in slalom and Justine Lamontagne in giant slalom.
This winter, the MSU Nordic contingent has put together a solid season led by sophomore Tilde Baangman. Baangman, a product of Oestersund, Sweden, is ranked first in NCAA qualification points heading into the weekend and has placed no lower than sixth in nine races. Baangman won classic titles at the Westminster and Denver Invitationals, while reaching the top of the podium in freestyle at DU.
Fredrik Nilsen, a freshman from Oslo, Norway, is leading the MSU men and is coming off a third and fourth place finish in freestyle and classic, respectively, at the DU Invitational.
