Oldham, a junior from Carbondale, Colo., recorded her first ever collegiate title winning the 7.5km freestyle in 20:54.2.
Montana State's one-two punch of Kate Oldham and Tilde Baangman highlighted an outstanding performance from the Bobcat Nordic squad on the second day of the 75th RMISA Championships at Crosscut Mountain Sports Center on Saturday afternoon.
Oldham, a junior from Carbondale, Colo., recorded her first ever collegiate title winning the 7.5km freestyle in 20:54.2. Teammate Tilde Baangman, who wore the yellow leader's bib heading into the race, finished second covering the course in 20:55.8. Anna Pryce, 16th, 22:28.3, completed MSU's scoring.
"It was a very windy day which made for interesting snow conditions, but we were able to find some very good waxes and structures to make our skis glide," said MSU head Nordic coach Adam St. Pierre. "It was outstanding seeing Kate and Tilde finishing one-two. Tilde has become a regular on the podium this year, winning multiple races and finishing no lower than fifth. This was Kate's second RMISA podium and her first victory."
The Bobcat men were paced by Fredrik Nilsen and Florian Winker who finished sixth and seventh, respectively. Nilsen covered the 7.5km course in 19:14.3, while Winker posted 19:15.7. Kai Meyers, 19th, 20:39.3, rounded out MSU's scoring.
"On the men's side, Freddy and Flo coming in six and seventh are very stout results," St. Pierre commented. "The men's racing was very close with just a few seconds separating the top of the pack."
The Bobcat women had the top point total of the race racking up 93 points, while the MSU men chipped in 68 points.
"We've been training a lot on the course and know it very well and a little home course advantage helped today," St. Pierre said. "It is awesome to have teammates pushing each other in training and racing.
"We will need a big day on Sunday to get on the podium for the weekend event as a team, but we are up to the challenge," he added.
Kristiane Bekkestad had Montana State's top slalom performance as the alpine portion of the championship concluded at Big Sky Resort. Bekkestad finished 14th with a two-run total of 1:44.33. Lana Zbasnik (1:45.00) and Brynne Hitchcock (1:45.07) completed MSU's scoring finishing 23rd and 24th, respectively.
Dawson Yates led the men's team placing 17th with a two-run total of 1:37.48. He was followed by Jamie Casselman, 19th, 1:37.61, and Henry Heaydon, 21st, 1:38.03.
Through six events Colorado sits atop the team standings with 498 points, followed by Utah 451.5, Denver 427, MSU 378.5, Alaska Anchorage 312, Westminster 256.5, Alaska Fairbanks 129, Nevada 128.5, and Colorado Mountain 125.
The RMISA Championships finish Sunday with the 20k classic races beginning at 9:30 a.m. at Crosscut Mountain Sports Center.
