“Everything is going well on the alpine side,” said MSU alpine coach Kris Shampeny on the Bobcats’ pre-championship training sessions. “We had a good training day on Tuesday. Conditions are going to be tough for everyone in the field.”
Nine Montana State skiers compete in the 71st NCAA Skiing Championships Wednesday-Saturday at Steamboat Resort and Howelsen Hill in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.
The Bobcats enter the championships fresh off a fourth-place finish at the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association/NCAA West Regional that took place in Bozeman twelve days ago. MSU's Tilde Baangman and Kate Oldham dominated the women's Nordic events at the RMISA meet and look to repeat on Thursday and Saturday, respectively.
The NCAA championships open with giant slalom on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. Competing for the Bobcats in the alpine events are Gianluca Boehm, Isak Staurset, Kristiane Bekkestad, and Justine Lamontagne. The slalom race is set for Friday night under the lights at Howelsen Hill starting at 6:40 p.m.
Boehm, Bekkestad, and Lamontagne each earned All-America honors at last year's NCAA meet.

The 7.5km Nordic freestyle is slated for Thursday at 10 a.m. with the 20km classic event concluding the championships on Saturday at 10 a.m. Competing for MSU in the Nordic events are Baangman, Oldham, Fredrik Nilsen, Kai Meyers, and Florian Winker.
Montana State's highest finish at an NCAA championship was fourth in 2016. Last winter, the Bobcats placed sixth in Lake Placid, N.Y. MSU has finished in the top 10 the last 14 seasons.
West region powerhouse Utah is the four-time defending champion; however, the Utes were unseated at this season's RMISA championships by Colorado.
