Two Bobcats Garner All-America Honors on First Day of NCAA Skiing Championships

Montana State senior Kristiane Bekkestad earned her fourth All-America honor, while sophomore Gianluca Boehm captured his second career All-America recognition as the 71st NCAA Skiing Championships opened on Wednesday morning with giant slalom at Steamboat Resort.

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. – March 6, 2024 – Montana State senior Kristiane Bekkestad earned her fourth All-America honor, while sophomore Gianluca Boehm captured his second career All-America recognition as the 71st NCAA Skiing Championships opened on Wednesday morning with giant slalom at Steamboat Resort.
Boehm, a product of Samedan, Switzerland, sat in 15th place after posting a 52.56 opening run but put it all together in his second go rattling off a clocking of 52.87, second fastest of the second run, to finish seventh overall in a time of 1:45.43. Teammate Isak Staurset placed 18th with a two-run total of 1:46.53. The native of Andalnes, Norway moved up from 21st after posting the 14th best time (53.52) in the second heat.
Utah's Mikkel Solbakken won the men's giant slalom title in 1:44.78.
Bekkestad, who had previously captured three All-America honors in slalom, finished tenth overall with a two-run total of 1:56.92. Her 55.49 was the seventh fastest clocking of the second run, moving her up one spot to finish in the top 10. The top five finishers earn first team All-America accolades, while racers finishing 6-10 are second team All-America.
MSU sophomore Justine Lamontagne finished just .19-seconds behind Bekkestad in 12th with a time of 1:57.11. The product of Sainte-Anne, Quebec, recorded the eighth fastest second run in 55.53.
Colorado's Magdalena Luczak won the women's giant slalom in 1:54.51.
After two of eight events, four-time defending NCAA champion Utah sits atop the team standings with 154.5 points, while Colorado 137.5, Denver 133, Vermont 101, Westminster 82, MSU 78, Alaska Anchorage 70, New Hampshire 59, Dartmouth 47, and St. Michael's 44.5 round out the top 10.
The Nordic 7.5km freestyle races take center stage on Thursday morning beginning at 10 a.m. at Howelsen Hill. The University of Colorado hosts this season's NCAA Skiing Championships.
