"We are always looking to see improvement," head coach Lyle Weese said of expectations for the weekend. "Just as a team, if we're building on what we did over the first three meets of the new year, then that means we're heading in a really good direction. We're definitely getting into the performance portion of the season where we've had some time for training and we've had a few meets, so we're ready to go out there and put up some good marks."
Montana State is coming off one of the more decorated indoor meets in recent program history, breaking two Big Sky records and four school records this past Friday at the Bobcat Performance meet in Worthington Arena.
15 top-ten marks were set in just one day across all event groups, with the 'Cats turning the page to February in impressive fashion.
"It was a great weekend," Weese said. "Coming off of that, we're headed to Spokane and headed to a great facility in The Podium. We're excited for this meet this year because it's been a strong meet in years past and it seems like it is significantly stronger this year. It's a great opportunity for our team to go over there and go up against high level competition pretty much across the board so we're excited to go over there and see how we stack up."
Shelby Schweyen was named Big Sky Women's Field Athlete of the Week after breaking the conference, school, and facility records in the pentathlon with 4,183 points. The graduate student from Missoula set new personal-bests in all five events on the way to the record, including the third-fastest 60 meter hurdle time in school history (8.59 seconds) and the fifth-highest high jump clearance in school history (5-08.50). The reigning Big Sky champion in the event holds the ninth-best pentathlon score in NCAA Division I this season.
Hailey Coey continued her memorable season with new conference, school, and facility records in the long jump with a mark of 20-09. The junior from Billings broke her own school record by more than five inches, adding on to a winter in which she already set the school record in the triple jump and ran the fifth-fastest 60 meters in school history.
Sydney Brewster broke her coach's 21-year-old school record in the shot put last Friday, heaving one 52-06.75 to clear MSU Hall of Famer Jen Allen's top mark. The sophomore from Sandy, Oregon, now holds both indoor and outdoor school records in the shot put.

The junior from Portland, Oregon, joins teammates Drake Wilkes, Noah Barbery, and Xavier Simpson as the four fastest 60 meter runners in school history.
