“But I think overall, it's a good weekend,” Houk added. “It definitely gives an opportunity to learn a lot from three really good teams.”
Montana State had late leads in sets one and three but were unable to hang on as Oregon posted a 25-23, 25-14, 25-23 win over MSU in the final match of the EVEN Hotel Bobcat Invite, Sunday afternoon in Shroyer Gym.
Montana State (1-2) held a 22-20 advantage in the opening set following a kill by freshman setter Teagan Jaynes. Oregon (3-0) answered with two points, before the Bobcats reclaimed a 23-22 lead on a kill via Madilyn Siebler. The Ducks closed of the set with three consecutive points, winning the frame on a kill by Alanah Clemente.
OU held a one-point margin midway through the second set before rattling off a 9-2 run, cruising to the victory. The Ducks out-hit the Bobcats .550 to .000 in the set.
Montana State owned a 21-19 lead in the third set after an Oregon hitting error. The Ducks responded with four consecutive points including back-to-back blocks. MSU tied the set at 23-all on a block by Camryn Greenwald and Makenzie Jackson, but two Bobcat errors handed Oregon the match.
"I really liked the energy and the execution that we played with in sets one and three," said MSU head coach Matt Houk. "Oregon is physical, and I can't imagine we're going to see a ton of kids that look like that. I thought we had some good responses and we're disappointed that we couldn't sneak one out and maybe stretch that thing out a little bit and give ourselves a chance.
"But I think overall, it's a good weekend," Houk added. "It definitely gives an opportunity to learn a lot from three really good teams."
Karli Heidemann led MSU offensively with eight kills, while Elli Tufto added seven. Jaynes finished with 20 assists, four kills, three digs and two service aces. Senior libero Lauren Lindseth led all players with a match-high ten digs.
Montana State plays at the Gonzaga Tournament, Sept. 4-6 in Spokane, Wash.
