Montana State wraps up fall season with 12th-place finish
BOZEMAN, Mont. --- After a difficult opening day at the Route 66 Invitational, the Montana State women's golf team carded the third-lowest team score in the tournament's final round on Tuesday to finish 12th in Broken Arrow, Okla.
The Bobcats posted a third-round score of 294 at the Golf Club of Oklahoma to finish with a 54-hole score of 916. The Bobcats climbed two spots from 14th to 12th in the final 18 holes as all five Bobcats climbed the leaderboard in the third round. Ashleigh Wilson and Elvira Flodström led the Bobcats at 14-over 230 on the par-72 course to tie for 45th overall. Lauren Nau finished one stroke back with a 231 to tie for 49th, Norah Seidl carded a 232 for a share of 52nd place, and Eva Heinz tied for 64th with a 235 as the Bobcats concluded the fall portion of their season in Oklahoma.
"We were in a much better headspace today, and it showed," Montana State head coach Brittany Basye said. "This is a total team effort, and not just one player who makes the difference. To put together one of the lower team rounds of the day in a field like this says a lot about these ladies. We capitalized on more opportunities, made some putts, and kept that momentum going throughout the round.
"As we head into the offseason, we have some work to do. We need to dig deeper into the mental side of the game, continue getting quality reps with our swings, and fine-tune our pre-shot routines. All seven of our players had great opportunities to compete this fall, and I think that will make for some really healthy competition for lineup spots in the spring.
"For now, it's important that our players catch up on their academics, enjoy a little downtime without the travel, and get back into a good routine. We've learned a lot this fall, and I'm excited about what this group can accomplish when we get back to competing in the spring. I'm proud of how they responded today, gritty play!"
The Bobcats counted a 70 from Heinz, a 74 from Flodström, and 75s from Wilson and Nau on Tuesday to leapfrog Colorado State (921) and North Florida (922) on the team leaderboard. Heinz posted the Bobcats' lowest individual round of the tournament, carding five birdies in the last 11 holes and finishing bogey free on her final eight holes on Tuesday. Flodström, who competed in the team lineup for the first time in her Bobcat career, strung together 12-striaght par-or-better holes, highlighted by a pair of birdies on holes 7 and 10. Wilson birdied twice on Tuesday and played consistent golf, posting pars on each of her first five holes and finishing her final four holes bogey free. Nau matched Wilson's 75 thanks to seven-straight bogey-free holes to start her round and birdies on holes 5 and 13. Seidl posted a 77 on Tuesday, carding the Bobcats' lone eagle of the tournament on hole 18 and adding a birdie on hole 7.
Georgia Southern (10-over 874) bested tournament host Tulsa (13-over 877) for the team title by just three strokes, while Wisconsin (890), Rutgers (897), and Cal Poly (900) completed the top five in Broken Arrow.
Margaux Brejo of Georgia Southern earned medalist honors after finishing 6-under 210 in Oklahoma. Tulsa's Zoe Shamy finished 3-under 213 for runner-up honors, Texas A&M's Athena Singh and Tulsa's Samantha Olson tied for third at even-par 216, and Joline Truong of Rutgers rounded out the top five at 1-over 217.
