Brown receives call-up from G League’s Cleveland Charge
BOZEMAN, Mont. – Former Montana State men's basketball star Darius Brown II signed a two-way contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers, the team announced on Friday.
Brown has spent the last two years with the Cavaliers' NBA G League affiliate Cleveland Charge, where he is averaging 12.4 points, 3.8 rebounds, 9.7 assists, and 2.2 steals in 34 games this season. Earlier this season, he dished a franchise-high 22 assists against the Texas Legends on Jan. 9 to finish just one shy of the G League record of 23 in a game. His 9.9 assists per game ranks third in the G League this season.
Brown competed for the Bobcats during the 2022-23 season and was named Big Sky Defensive Player of the Year and Third-Team All-Big Sky after averaging 9.1 points, 4.4 rebounds, 4.9 assists, and 1.8 steals per game. He made 33 starts in 34 games played and shot 46.5% from the field, 39.7% from three, and 90.9% from the free throw line. Brown guided the Bobcats to the second of three-straight Big Sky Tournament titles and NCAA Tournament appearances between 2022 and 2024. He holds a share of the Montana State single-game assists record with 16 in a contest while his 167 dimes and 60 steals in 2022-23 rank third and fifth in a single season in school history, respectively. Darius is the older brother of current Bobcat guard Davian Brown.
Brown seeks to become the third Bobcat to appear in an NBA game, joining Keljin Blevins, who played 48 games across the 2020-21 and 2021-22 season for the Portland Trailblazers, and Tyler Hall, who appeared in one game for the New York Knicks during the 2021-22 season. Four total Bobcats have played professionally in the NBA and other associated historical leagues, with Ray Kuka competing in the Basketball Association of America (BAA) for the New York Knicks during the 1947-48 and 1948-49 seasons and Jack Gillespie playing in the American Basketball Association (ABA) for the New York Nets in 1969-70.
