Bobcats sweep doubles, Nia Gelashvili and Angel Bean earn singles wins in Cheney
CHENEY, Wash. – The Montana State women's tennis team fought to the final point in a close 4-3 defeat to Eastern Washington in the Jim Thorpe Fieldhouse in Cheney, Wash., on Friday.
Nia Gelashvili earned a three-set victory on court two, and Angel Bean swept her court-three match to highlight Montana State's day in singles. The Cats also came away with wins in all three doubles matches in their first of two matches in Washington this weekend.
"Eastern Washington played a great match today," Montana State head coach Hailey Barrett said. "We started off well, winning the doubles point, and then just came up short in singles. We'll look to rebound with a great match against Gonzaga tomorrow."
The Bobcats won each of their three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead to start the match. Lola Bean and Kavya Khirwar posted a 6-1 victory over Leandra Nizetic and Maria Lopez at No. 3 doubles, and Angel Bean and Nia Gelashvili followed with a 6-1 win of their own, defeating Anait Arutiunian and Sara Vasic on court two to provide the clincher in doubles. Anna Wise and Terezie Stverakova won a tight battle over Olivia Marais and Zoe Prael, 7-5, on court one to complete the three-match sweep.
The match came down to the final point in singles as the Bobcats and Eagles traded points down the stretch. Eastern Washington tied the match at one point apiece as Nizetic defeated Wise, 6-1, 6-2, on court one. Angel Bean then put Montana State back out in front with a 6-3, 6-2 sweep of Pradel at No. 3 singles. Stverakova's court-four match went to three sets, with Eastern Washington's Veronika Gayevyk narrowly defeating the Bobcat freshman, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. Gelashvili then responded with a match-tying win on court two, defeating Arutiunian in a third-set tiebreaker, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (4). The Eagles earned two-straight match wins at No. 6 and No. 5 singles to clinch the match as Aneliss Zamfirescu earned a 6-2, 6-2, win over Elle Middleton and Marais defeated Lola Bean, 7-5, 6-0. Eastern Washington improved to 7-4 on the season and 1-0 in Big Sky play while Montana State fell to 3-7 and 0-3 in the Big Sky.
