Cats four strokes back of lead with 18 holes remaining
GOODYEAR, Ariz. --- The Montana State women's golf team posted a score of 7-over 295 on Tuesday, ending round two of the Bobcat Desert Classic second on the team leaderboard.
After entering the day with a two-stroke lead, the Cats remained among the top teams at the tournament with a cumulative score of 582 (287-295) through 36 holes. Sailor Graham (71) and Norah Seidl (72) both carded par-or-better rounds on Tuesday, while Ashleigh Wilson and Lauren Greeny finished the day as the Bobcats' individual leaders in a tie for 11th place at 1-over 145.
"Obviously, we struggled a little bit today on the golf course – didn't make as many birdies and had a few higher numbers – but that's okay," Montana State head coach Brittany Basye said. "It's the second round, and we have one more day to finish it off. The girls had a good practice after we get done playing today, and we just have to go out and keep fighting pedal to the metal, finish off this tournament, and get ready for conference. Sailor had a great round today with 1-under par, and she actually had a dunk shot from 120 yards on full force and ended up with an eagle, so that's pretty cool. But all around a group effort. I'm proud of them for not giving up. They kept patient, we're learning more and more about our games every day, and we just have to keep fighting. Any time we can give ourselves the opportunity to be in a position to win a golf tournament is a good thing. Obviously, we didn't play as well as we wanted today, but we have one more round. Tomorrow they're going get after it, and we're going keep playing, learning, and fighting until the very end."
Sailor Graham's 1-under 71 while competing individually highlighted the day for the Bobcats in Goodyear, Ariz. Graham kicked off a string of 11-straight bogey-free holes with an eagle on No. 4 while adding birdies on holes 2 and 8. She posted the Cats' fifth par-or-better round of the weekend to climb 13 spots on the leaderboard from 28th to 15th.
The Cats counted second-round scores from Seidl (72), Greeny (73), and Wilson (74), while Eva Heinz and Maddie Montoya each carded a 76 to round out the team golfers. Seidl shot par or better on each of her final 14 holes, highlighted by birdies on holes 10, 16, and 18. Greeny started and ended her second round with a birdie while totaling four across the round. Wilson began her round with a bogey-free front nine, posted a birdie on No. 5, and sunk pars on holes 11 through 17. Heinz shot par or better on her first seven holes of the day, adding birdies on holes 4, 7, and 14. Montoya's second round was highlighted by birdies on Nos. 6 and 10, as well as a string of five-straight pars to conclude her day at the Golf Club of Estrella.
Lauren Nau carded a round of 79 in her second round while competing individually.
With 18 holes remaining, Wilson and Greeny are tied for 11th place at 1-over 145, Graham is one stroke back in 15th (146), Heinz sits in 19th with a 147, Montoya and Seidl hold a share of 23rd at 149, and Nau is tied for 53rd with a 36-hole score of 156.
