PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Montana State women's tennis team came up short of a victory in the first round of the Big Sky Conference Championships with a 4-2 loss to Idaho State on Thursday.
A pair of Bobcats picked up singles wins as the team made its third consecutive appearance in the conference tournament, but the Montana State (8-11) effort was not enough to overcome Idaho State (13-7).
"Idaho State played a great match today, they are a very tough team, but I'm so proud of our team," head coach Hailey Barrett said. "They battled hard through all the ups and downs of this sesaon. A big thank you goes out to our support staff for all that they do to make this possible. We have tremendous people in Bozeman, and we are so proud to represent them. Go Cats!"
The No. 3 seeded Bengals took the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. Idaho State carried the momentum into the singles, with Anna Wise first off the court with a loss at No. 2.
Terezie Stverakova snagged a pair of 6-4 set wins, defeating Sydney Morris for the Bobcat's first point of the day. With the win, Stverakova ended the season with three straight singles victories and a 3-0 record in the No. 5 spot.
Meanwhile, Nia Gelashvili picked up a 6-3 first set win. She dropped the second 3-6 forcing Asem Shoybek to a deciding set. Gelashvili wrapped up the match with a 6-1 final set, adding the second and final point to the scoreboard for the Bobcats.
Angel Bean fell in straight sets to Millie Day, playing at the No. 1 spot for the first time this season. Lola Bean won her first set, but lost the next two as Idaho State's Emmy Richards clinched the match in favor of the Bengals.
Kavya Khirwar was tied 4-4 in her deciding set when the match was concluded.
