Trey Brokaw enters his first season as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Montana State track & field and cross country programs in 2026-2027. Brokaw will coach the middle distance and distance runners, help to recruit all event areas, and spend significant time cultivating relationships with Bobcat alumni and donors. Â
Brokaw spent the past two years as an assistant coach at Kansas State University, where the men’s track & field team went from last in the Big 12 Conference in 2025 to finishing fourth at the NCAA Championships during the 2026 indoor season. One of the fastest turnarounds in NCAA track & field history, the 2026 men’s team also finished eighth at the NCAA outdoor national meet. As recruiting coordinator at K-State, Brokaw helped sign the top recruiting class in the NCAA in 2025, bringing in 56 new recruits from around the globe. On the women’s side, the turnaround was equally as impressive, with K-State finishing seventh at the NCAA Indoor Championships in 2026. Â
At K-State, Brokaw also coached the middle distance runners. Under his direction, Vienna Lahner had one of the best seasons in the history of the program. The Adams State transfer broke school records in the 1,000-meters (2:44.33) and the mile (4:38.84) in 2026, the latter of which stood since 1983. The mile school record is even more impressive considering her high school personal best a few years earlier was 5:11.03 for 1600 meters. Lahner almost broke the school record in the 3,000m as well, running 9:17.52, nearly one minute faster than her personal best from Adams State (10:06.19).
Elite student-athlete recruitment and development extended beyond Lahner, with true freshmen Stella Miner earning Big-12 all-conference honors with a third-place result in the 1,000m during the 2025 indoor season. Miner’s 800m time of 2:06.09 as a freshman qualified her for the USA U20 Championships. Brokaw’s flexibility on the recruiting front also significantly helped K-State on the national stage. Daniela Wamokpego, a transfer from the University of Iowa, won an NCAA indoor title in the women’s triple jump in 2026 (13.84m/45-5.00). Additionally, Brokaw helped sign three true freshmen sprinters who advanced to the final at the NCAA meet in the women’s 4x400-meter relay, breaking the K-State school record in the process (3:28.74). Â
Prior to K-State, Brokaw was the Director of Cross Country and Track & Field at Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois. Only twenty minutes from his family farm, Brokaw rebuilt his hometown team, achieving great success at the conference and national level. One NCAA national qualifier, four NCAA Regional qualifiers, 12 individual conference champions, and 18 school records highlight Brokaw’s three-year tenure at Western Illinois despite inheriting one of the smallest rosters in the NCAA.
Brokaw guided 2023 OVC Scholar-Athlete of the Year Logan Lommel while at Western Illinois. Lommel set eight school records, ranging from the 4x400m relay during the indoor track & field season to the 10,000-meters in cross country. Another standout performer, Ackeen Colley, set five school records, including the men’s indoor and outdoor 800m. The Oklahoma transfer ran a 1:47.98 indoors, ending his Leatherneck career with five conference titles, a Drake Relays 800m title, a conference record in the 800m, and a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Prior to Western Illinois, Brokaw spent time at the University of Akron as the head cross country coach, assistant track & field coach, and recruiting coordinator. He guided middle distance runners to eight Mid-American Conference (MAC) titles. He also coached two-time NCAA qualifier Mackenzie Andrews in the mile and 3,000m steeplechase. Andrews won five individual conference titles as a senior and clocked a mile time of 4:27.83 under Brokaw's guidance.
Brokaw started his coaching career at his alma mater, Emporia State, before coaching three seasons at Northern Iowa while working toward a master's degree in Exercise Physiology. He joined the staff at Nebraska as the recruiting coordinator for track and field and cross country. While in Lincoln, Brokaw signed George Kusche, who qualified for eight NCAA Championships. Kusche was named the 2018 Big Ten Freshman of the Year in cross country and won the 2021 Big Ten Championship. On the track, he set two school records for the Cornhuskers in the mile (3:57.93) and 3,000m (7:50.93). As a graduate student, Kusche broke the South African indoor national record in the 5,000m (13:28.95).
