The Montana State women's basketball team scored the game's first six points and never looked back; en route to a 73-55 win over the University of Denver, Tuesday night in the Mile High City.
Montana State (2-0) parlayed its quick start into a 23-5 margin following an Emily Allen jumper midway through the opening stanza. Freshman Lindsay Stockton nailed a three-pointer at the buzzer and the Bobcats entered intermission with a 44-26 advantage.
MSU shot 69 percent from the floor in the first half.
“I thought our defense really dictated our offense in the first half,” said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. “We did a nice job with our communication on the defensive end and that's been a point of emphasis. We still have a lot of work to do, especially on the details, but I think we can be a very exciting defensive squad once we get some things worked out.”
The Pioneers crept to within 14-points to begin the second stanza, but following a Binford timeout, the Bobcats responded with a 6-0 run. MSU took its largest lead of the game at 68-45 with 4:05 remaining on a Jasmine Hommes layup.
Rachel Semansky led all Bobcats scorers with 14 points, including a seven-of-nine effort from the field. She was followed by Ashley Brumwell and Kalli Durham with 11 points, each. MSU's bench chipped in 28 points and was paced by Hommes with nine points.
For the game, Montana State shot 50 percent from the field and grabbed 18 steals. In addition, the Bobcat defense forced 26 DU turnovers. The Bobcats were led under the boards by Brumwell and Jackie Elliott with six rebounds, apiece.
“I'm proud of the way the kids played on this trip,” Binford said. “To go on the road and get two wins is an achievement. However, we're not going to let up on them. This team has great potential, but we still have a lot of work to accomplish.”
Montana State will be on a ten-day hiatus until it faces Clemson in the first-round of the SMU Invitational in Dallas, Nov. 23-24.
